Towards The Stars Empty Towards The Stars

    Prologue

    ~ ~ ~

At the beginning of his life, a boy is a dreamer. He believes in what the future has in store for him, and in his own ability to become anything he can dream of. Before the young are set endless possibilities, should they choose to take them. At some point, a boy begins a journey to adulthood that can take him to many strange places. In time, the boy becomes a man, and is made aware of all the things he could have become. But this is not the end of his journey; even with the joy and sorrow he's encountered already, becoming a man is merely one of the last ports he knows is waiting for him. There are still countless unknown lands lying ahead of him in the adventures of life. Will he relinquish the dreams he once had as a boy, or will this man hold on to the faith of his youth? All we can say for sure is that every boy, every girl, every child in the Universe has the right to dream - For every great man of valor was once a boy.

EDIT: Also, I think it's important to mention now before I forget again,

Most of the prologue was based off of one of the Outlaw Star episode-intro narrations.

I added onto it and edited it, but it's not my complete original idea.

    ~ ~ ~

    Thanks!

This is sort of going to be a collection of loosely-connected stories.

I'm still not sure what all I'm going to do with it XS

    Onto Chapter 1!

    ~ ~ ~

There are many stories regarding the mysterious "Galactic Leyline." It has been sought by countless researchers and archaeologists, before being dismissed as little more than a pipe dream to those who wish to understand the mysteries of how Galactic sciences became so advanced in such an unnaturally short time. However, the Ctarl-Ctarl and the Lorgan races still secretly pursue the knowledge and wealth of this unknowable treasure, while the Kei Pirates have devoted immense funds and manpower to uncovering its location. No one can lay claim to truly understanding the Galactic Leyline and its possible origins, but what is known for sure is that - Should it truly exist, and should the stories be true - Whosoever finds it will have solved a riddle that has baffled scientists for centuries.

    ~ ~ ~

On the Blue Heaven space station, a small, elegant ship came to dock in one of its more secluded ports. At first mystified at the ship's design, mechanics soon got to work doing whatever they could to inspect it for damage. On the side opened up a circular doorway, allowing a certain fellow of long black hair to step out.

Striding up to Zev Raregroove, a Corbanite in his full environmental suit hummed in thought. "Pretty cool ship you've got there," he said in a calm voice. "The name's Gurruno, I own this space station here. We've found some damage with your ship that's going to take quite a while to fix - The parts on these things are cool and all, but they're a pain in the ass to find replacements for. Is it cool by you to take a look around the restaurants and such while we get to work on this baby?" He noted the pink-skinned, horned girl to follow, her tail swishing aggravatedly; he didn't say a word, though.

Zev gave a calm smile. "Sure," he said, "That's fine by me. My friend and I could use a bite to eat, anyway." As he walked away with Namah following close behind, he said over his shoulder, "Give me a rundown on the price when we get back, okay, Gurruno?" As the short alien life form waved in confirmation, Zev took a look around. After exiting the dock, he and Namah had found themselves in some kind of contained city. High above, the massive dome of phenomenally reinforced polycarbonate allowed them to see the endless stars beyond, all aglow in their tiny pinpricks. On the floor of the station, however, a miniature city had been built to attend to the needs of any visitors - Restaurants, casinos, convenience stores, just about everything in a regular rest-stop town.

After taking it all in, Namah turned her luminescent green orbs up to Zev. "You know," she said evenly, "I get the worst feeling about being here. I think we should try to keep out of the main 'city' until the ship's - ...Fixed..." She gave an exasperated sigh - The much taller young man was already making his way towards some manner of casino. "It would be nice if he ever listened to me." Shrugging, she followed him in.

Neither of them noticed the blue eyes watching from beneath a hood. Some figure across the street wearing a long, hooded mantle gave a low growl. Crossing the street, they made their way into an alleyway.

    ~ ~ ~

When Zev and Namah finally emerged, the former sobbing dejectedly at the two lonely white cards with green stripes in his hand, nearly all of the shops had closed. Only a few casinos and restaurants remained open, and the vast majority of visitors to the station had gone to bed. Seemingly alone now, Zev and Namah turned into the next alley to try and find a quick way to a cheap restaurant.

They certainly weren't ready for a hooded figure to block their way. "I hope you'll make this all easy on yourself, Zev Raregroove," she said lowly, "And tell me everything you know about the Galactic Leyline!" At the flat stares she got, the young woman seethed and ripped her hood off. Ears flicking at their sudden liberation from the mantle's hood, she got into a combat stance. "I can just beat it out of you!!" Snarling, Aisha's fangs grew in size, and with a crackling of energy, her nails grew into claws. "Anything you want to say, Raregroove!!?" She got down on all fours, grinning savagely and ready to pounce.

Watching her a few moments longer with wide-open eyes, Zev and Namah said nothing. With one finger raised, Zev prepared to say something in response. At last, he delivered his message to her with a single word: "NOPE." He and Namah turned on their heels in unison and ran like hell. Stunned, Aisha stared after them as she returned to normal.

"H-HEY, YOU JERKS!!" She hurriedly scooped up her mantle and ran after them.

Nice start to an interesting story. Is this an alternate U, or linked to the Main Universe of the RPG? Either way, good start.
Do you plan on continuing this one?

Thank you for your comment, Klak. And yes - I'm continuing this now!

One of the most amazing things about the Universe we live in is the multitude of strange places where friendship can be found. Even the most brief of meetings can come back as a lasting companion, and even those who once seemed to be the most hated enemies can become your most valuable allies. Perhaps one of the most important lessons to learn is that you should never doubt the power of the bonds you can form; you never know when the next person you meet could be a friend you'll have for a lifetime.

    ~ ~ ~

Once they'd hauled the Ctarl-Ctarl to a small Chinese restaurant, Zev and Namah found her to be instantly revived by the smell of food. As they stared at her in wonder, awe, and disgust, she proceeded to demolish any food they set before her. Had Namah not saved up all of her money and not spent any wong on the casino, they'd never be able to pay for the woman's meals; even with the remarkably cheap prices the delicious food sold for.

Between devouring bowls of food, she revealed that her name was Aisha Clanclan; that she was an officer of the Ctarl-Ctarl Empire sent to find the Galactic Leyline; and that she was quite grateful for the food they'd given her. At last, Zev spoke up to ask the question on both his and Namah's minds: "What exactly is the Galactic Leyline?" Once Aisha had finished her last bowl and flexed her muscles a bit, she put an end to her showing off and sized Zev up. Convinced he wasn't feigning ignorance, she began to explain.

"The Galactic Leyline is an immense treasure trove," she said. "It's older than the Great Space Age, maybe even older than the Galactic Government's founding. No one knows where it comes from, but whoever finds it will become a legend! I'd be rich if I can find it! I'll finally become a Lieutenant, maybe even a Commander or a General!! And most importantly, I can finally return to Ctarl and spend all the time in the sun I want!!" Watching her, bemused, Zev and Namah said nothing throughout her little spiel.

Knowing what Zev was going to say, Namah tried to stop him. However, she was simply too late on the draw. "Say, Aisha," Zev said, "Would you like to come with us?" At the delighted look on Aisha's face, Namah simply facepalmed.

It would appear they had just added another quest to their checklist.

Nice, nice continuation. Way to intro Aisha. Is this how she met Zev canon-wise? Very cool.

Yes, this is her canon meeting with Zev.

Thank you for the kind review, Klak~ Onto the next chapter!

    ~ ~ ~

There are many things worthy of fear in the Universe. Space pirates, solar storms, errant asteroids...But to fear space for itself, for its inky emptiness studded with countless stars, accomplishes nothing. A fear of the unknown is a fear of living. We go through our whole lives unaware of what exactly the future holds, not knowing where we'll have to go nor how many roads we'll be forced to walk before our dreams come to fruition. One who is wise enough to avoid unnecessary dangers will prosper - But one who is too afraid to chase his own dreams can never thrive.

    ~ ~ ~

For the third time that week, I woke up in cold sweats, with a scream. Thankful that I hadn't woken Jim up in the next room over, just as grateful as I'd been the past two nights, I turned to look out the window. Yep. Still completely dark, too early for the sunrise, too close to said sunrise for the stars and moon to be visible. I check the drawer next to me - There's my pistol, loaded, engraved with my name and my place of birth: Gene Starwind, Mars Colony 17.

Getting up and getting dressed for the day, I make my way to the bathroom. Between the sink and the toilet built into one wall and the cramped tub against the other, the bathroom that Jim and I share in our apartment has approximately the same movement space as the closet, across the bedroom from it. Negotiating my way in front of the sink, I get down to brushing my teeth. Once that's done, I splash some cold water on my face and sigh. The same nightmare, the same memories I don't want to relive. I try to pretend it doesn't bother me, that I can live with myself, but pretending won't make it true.

It haunts me that I couldn't do anything to save him. Every time I wake up from that nightmare, I secretly hope that he's somewhere out there, waiting to tell his son that it's alright, that they can go back to the way it was. But then, I admit it to myself - He's gone. He's not out there somewhere, looking for me. He's dead. And I remember with a flare of rage who I have to blame for that - Harry and Ron MacDougall, those two b------s. I know that my life wasn't the first they ruined, and that my dad won't be last innocent person they've killed, but it still makes me so angry that I can't stand it.

Another splash of ice-cold water on my face. Snapped out of it, thankfully, I inspect my face in the mirror. I definitely need a shave. Retrieving a new razor from its box and discarding the cardboard into the waste basket, I proceed to take a can of shaving cream out of the medicine cabinet. Hopefully, an everyday task like this will help me shake this feeling.

    Yeah...Hopefully.
