First, we extend our sympathy for the news of what has occurred to your brother; be assured that for every one of our comrades to fall, ten of the Tsar's do too!

In light of this, and the personal recommendation of Mikhail Kalinin, we are proud to offer you the opportunity to join the Red Army's Main Intelligence Directorate, 1st People's Guard Brigade. Understand that refusing this opportunity would be considered dereliction of duty.

You may have heard of rumors, doubts about the potency of the revolution in light of the secrets of the Tsars and the vile aid that Rasputin has given to the White Army, but fear not! The reactionaries can not drive back the inevitable swing of history. No matter what abominations they bring out of Kremlin's pit, no monster can match the strength of labor unchained!

Keeping this in mind, our great leader Lenin has founded an elite guard to match foul sorcery with muscle and sinew, steel and piston. An armored psionic brigade to defend our people with the strength of diesel engines and pure worker's spirit! You have been chosen for this brigade, young Viktor, based on our scientific assessments and your experience in war.

Show no mercy to the Tsars that would drag our people back into the long night of the dark ages!

Dear Admiral Bunta,

I hope my report finds you well.

Our forces have managed to hold the Absolute Defense Line against the encroaching Kaiju without fail. Since the introduction of mechanized walker units, our casualty rate has fallen to one soldier for every 400 Kaiju slain. We are now more concerned with maintaining fuel supplies than obtaining reinforcements; the mechanized walkers demand a large volume of fuel in exchange for their awe-inspiring combat prowess. It is, however, a price I would pay any day.

Captain Domino, he is a character which I have not fully come to trust. It is no secret that his training with the mechanized walker legions has helped safeguard the sovereignty of our nation; nonetheless, I feel intensely distrustful of all outsiders who show up in our country without good reason. It is also a fact that much of what he is telling us about his past is a fabrication. He claimed that he gained experience facing Kaiju-esque beings during the Russian Civil War, yet also claimed that he fought in Europe during the Great War. The two events occurred at the same time; he could not have been in two places at once.

Regardless of his true motivations, I am willing to tolerate his presence so long as he contributes to the war effort. He has recognized the need for Japan to develop an indigenous mech design to combat the Kaiju; our current models are surplus from the Great War, and are more suited to shrugging off machine-gun fire than Kaiju claws. He has stripped nearly 90% of the armor from his own unit, and modified parts from a scrapped unit to give it a limited flight capacity using high-pressure gas... the performance increase is unbelievable. He dances through hordes of Kaiju whilst others clumsily sit behind cover and burn their way through our ammo surplus. The future of mechanized warfare lies not in ponderous, heavily-armored leviathans, but in nimble, high-speed attackers specialized towards hit-and-run attacks.

This brings me on to my final point; striking at the Kaiju hives on Hokkaido. The concentration of Kaiju on the island is too high for a conventional assault, even with our mechanized forces; instead, Captain Domino is drafting up a small team of volunteers for a special mission to destroy the hive. He has provided me with the specifications for an indigenous mechanized design for this assault, which I have taken the liberty of dubbing 'Zero'. I enclose the schematics with this letter.

I know Emperor Hirohito opposes our militarization, but the time to strike is now. Armed with the Zero, we could not only destroy the hives on Hokkaido, but achieve our goal of forging an empire in East Asia. Our army would be unstoppable... Domino does not care to think about the uses of the Zero beyond wiping out this infestation. I think he is a fool. I hope you will see the sense in pressing the Zero into immediate production.

To put it mildly, sir, these machines we have... They are atrocious.

Take the Firebird for instance (A sterling example of how to abuse my perfectly good theory of rocketry) - the thing will cripple nearly any pilot with the first "jump", and finish off anyone unfortunate enough to live and the machine itself with the landing. The Svarog will kill the inhabitant with heat after only the first burst of Tesla's device, and the entire Triglav line will sink into anything less than concrete. These problems might have been easily rectified had we lived in a more peaceful age with abundant time and resources, but these are troubled times. Yet, I am told to improve and make these things better. I continue to be baffled by the choices of the general staff, but I suppose we all must do our part lest we have our loyalty questioned by the commissars.

I have insisted we try to mimic the "landship" designs from the West, but time and time again that young upstart Lebedev dismisses my concerns. How Schmidt came to trust him baffles me. Fine for those two to have dreams, but it falls on me to tighten the bolts and do the work.

I would almost be tempted to desert to the Whites, if I had not seen what their mad Tsars have wrought. Their monsters kill more than just their pilots.

Our forces have all but extinguished the nationalists entrenched on the Japanese mainland. Hokkaido remains their last enclave, but already Admiral Bunta is gathering his forces aboard the Hosho in preparation of the final assault. Within the year, the disciples of the false emperor shall be expelled from our great nation. At that point, the people's revolution shall be truly complete.

I firmly believe we are building a better Japan - one our daughter will be proud to grow up in, and eventually fight for. We are leaving the shadow of Hirohito's spineless aristocracy - our new Japan will be one governed by the soldiers, the workers, the farmers - it will be governed by the spirit of Japan itself, which is the only form of government fit for our country. Shingen shall only be our leader insofar as that he will maintain the balance of our nation - driving out corruption and exploitation, and coordinating our vast military might in defense of our homeland. Already, he has set to work reestablishing the Shinsengumi; they shall act as his eyes and ears throughout the country, protecting us from those who would do us harm.

You will also have heard that many foreigners have been expelled from Japan... such action is only right. Those who are unable to love their country as an extension of their own selves are fundamentally incompatible with our newfound way of life. Instead, they may watch from afar as our nation glows in the light of socialism. With any luck, such a sight shall inspire them to start revolutions within their own country. Inevitably, the workers of the world shall, together, break off the shackles of capitalism and rejoice in the light of the human soul; Shingen has foreseen this.

After the war, we will visit your parents down in Hiroshima. Perhaps, by then, the Yamato will have finished construction; that would be a sight to behold.
